This project from my studies is my personal favorite. It is an exploration of death and funeral culture around the world as well as in different cultural contexts with 40 exciting illustrations.

The concept:
A book about funeral culture-and history-around the world.
The texts are drawn from a wide variety of sources, including master’s theses, reports, and Wikipedia.
with 40 typographic illustrations
Funeral culture is not as bleak all over the world as it is in our latitudes
A heavy topic made entertaining
Life expectancy statistics increased by 0.1 year on each double page. Always bottom right instead of page numbers (“real” page numbers only on left page)
Each chapter and book and section introduction with clever quote
416 pages with thread binding hardcover, dust jacket + embossing
Accent color magenta (A book about death, but an ode to life)
Has an extensive index, table of contents, and numerous cross-references
I managed this extensive project in part with scripts I programmed myself for InDesign.
Spine Text:
Once you pass on, have you considered what will happen to your remains? Possibly you would like your ashes to be shot into space. Or perhaps you would prefer to be frozen and hope for technological breakthroughs in the future. But you certainly don’t want to be dug up again every few years like in Madagascar. How does such a burial actually take place in Hinduism? Or with our Greek neighbors? And why do people in Mexico deal with death so easily? How were people buried in ancient times or the Stone Age, and what does a cremation technician do? All these questions and many more are answered in this book about funeral culture and history around the world. For this last procession, which awaits each of us at some point, is celebrated in every culture and in every era as a special ritual event. But how this ritual takes place can be very different and sometimes quite bizarre. Coupled with 40 exciting typographic illustrations, this book is not only worth knowing and an important examination of transience – but is also really fun!

The page numbers on the right-hand side of each page are presented in the form of life expectancy statistics, which increase by one decimal place on each double page. On the left side are regular page numbers.
